LISZT VIA CRUCIS
Mazurka Music and Art Society presents the third concert of the 2024/25 season:
A musical odyssey about the passion of Jesus Christ and the 14 Stations of the Cross.
Mikolaj Warszynski will join forces with Kappella Kyrie for a performance of this work in the arrangement for piano & choir & soloists. Please join us for this unique event taking place on Palm Sunday, March 24th at 7pm at the Anglican Parish of Christ Church, located in 12116 102 Ave NW in downtown Edmonton.
Via Crucis, (The 14 Stations of the Cross) by Franz Liszt for mixed choir, soloists, and piano, and refers to a series of images depicting Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion and accompanying prayers. It is a work of great serenity and contemplation, and as one of the last large scale works of Liszt, it is significant because it reaches the limits of tonality, breaking the status quo of predominant tonal music of the time.
In addition to the Via Crucis, in the first half there will also be a solo piano performance of Liszt’s Legend “St. Francis of Assisi preaching to the Birds” and choir performances of religious chorales Crucem Tuam by Paweł Lukaszewski & O vos omnes by Pablo Casals.
Please join us on Palm Sunday for this rarely performed masterpiece ‚Via Crucis’ composed in the late 1870s by Abbé Liszt. This piece exists in many versions - piano solo/ piano duo / mixed chorus with solo voices and organ / mixed chorus with solo voices and piano - the latter being the version which will be performed at the upcoming concert. The work depicts in music the 14 Stations of the Cross, and features reworking of Bach chorales, a capella hymns including Stabat Mater, and piano solo interludes, interwoven all together creating a fascinating musical odyssey.
This piece was so bold in its musical language, with some stations bordering on dodecaphony, that it wasn’t even published during the composers lifetime and was first performed 50 years after Liszt’s death. Truly a testament to the composer’s mantra, who stated: „my sole ambition is to hurl my javelin into the infinite space of the future.”

MUTTART HALL
MacEwan Conservatory, 10050 MacDonald Drive, Edmonton
In honour of the 10-year anniversary since the inaugural concert of Mazurka Music and Art, renowned pianists Zuzana Simurdova and Mikolaj Warszynski, will perform a recital dedicated to the works of Frédéric Chopin in the Muttart Hall of the MacEwan Conservatory in Edmonton.
In addition to the music, an art installation by artists Liz Ingram (recently awarded the Order of Canada) and Bernd Hildebrandt, will also be presented on stage during the performance. The musical program for this recital will consist of the four Chopin Ballades, performed by Zuzana Simurdova, and Chopin Scherzos & Polonaises, performed by Mikolaj Warszynski. The art installation will consist of a series of digitally printed habotai silk banners, which relate in both imagery and movement to the music and will be set up on the stage around the pianos. A special guest appearance by dancer, Marynia Fekecz-Mangan, will serve to animate the art installation within the musical framework.
The idea to present a classical piano recital in collaboration with a visual artistic component, offers a new dimension to the traditional concert experience, engaging the listener with a visual counterpart to the music. The idea to present a full Chopin recital between two musicians is something which generates much excitement among the audience; Chopin remains an iconic composer who is synonymous with the piano, and the opportunity to present masterworks from Chopin’s corpus - the Ballades, Scherzos & Polonaises - in one concert presentation is a rare occurrence and will be of special interest for musical connoisseurs.
